Mental Health

Details

Mental Health is the fundamental and integral aspect of our health. The WHO constitutes states:”Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.  This refers to how people think, emote and interact with other, earn a living and enjoy among themselves. Mental Health is crucial at each every stage of life whether it is childhood, adolescence or adulthood.

Mental health deals with a state of human being where an individual perceives their own abilities, able to cope up with normal stressful situations of life, can work productively and able to make a contribution to the  their community and make choices.

Major factors can contribute to mental illness or mental health problems, including

  • Biological factors include genetics, infections, prenatal damage, substance abuse etc.
  • Psychological factors include abuse, trauma, neglect, human rights violation etc.
  • Environmental factor include expectations, dysfunctional lifestyle, stressful work environment etc.

In India, only 7.3% of entire population i.e. 365 million youth reports such mental health problems. The foremost reason, India lacks behind in Mental Health is lack of sensitivity and awareness of the issue. Such public stigma associated with mental health problems also affects help-seeking among the population. Those who reports for their problems are often tagged as “lunatics” or ”abnormal” by the society. This generally results to fiendish cycle of suffering, ignominy, isolation of the patients.

Mental Health in India needs active intervention as well as allocation of resources by the government to the cause. To get rid of or reduce the stigma of Mental Health problems we must need to aware, train and sensitize the general public. This can only be done when we educate the society about the mental illness.
